The 5 Step Adoption Process at Absolute Exotics SA

If you have been considering adopting an exotic pet, Absolute Exotics SA is here to guide you through the process. We follow a comprehensive 5-step process to ensure a smooth journey, from consultation to adoption day, and beyond.

Step 1: Schedule a FREE Exotic Pet Consultation

We believe in making informed decisions when adopting exotic pets. To get started, we require all new clients to schedule and attend a complimentary consultation at our Benoni A.H. office and showroom. Our experienced team is equipped to answer all possible questions and queries you might have about a specific animal and the correct care required. During this consultation, you'll gain essential insights into the risks, facts, and specific care needs of each unique exotic animal.

Whenever possible, you may also meet some of our tame, fully-trained exotic pets, providing a clear understanding of their size and required handling. Our goal is to equip you with the knowledge necessary for responsible exotic pet ownership, and making the right decision when choosing the right suitable animal that will make the perfect new exotic pet.

Why Step 1 is Important

This step is essential because it equips potential pet owners with vital information, ensuring they make informed decisions that benefit both the owner and the animal. It helps prevent unsuitable adoptions through education, reducing the risk of future rehoming or surrender due to uncontrollable behavior. Ultimately, it safeguards against future emotional trauma for both the owner and the animal.

Step 2: Client Details, Personal Information, Purchase Agreement & Booking Deposit

Once you’ve made the decision to adopt, you will be required to complete a personal information form. Upon submission, you will receive a proforma invoice and a purchase agreement that outlines all terms and conditions, ensuring complete transparency about the adoption process.

To secure your adoption, the following booking deposits are required:

  • For animals valued up to R10,000: A deposit of R2,500.
  • For animals with a purchase price/value over R10,000: A deposit of 35% of the total amount as per the invoice.

Please note: This deposit is non-refundable and serves to initiate the sourcing process and secure your exotic pet from our network of reputable breeders.

Once the deposit reflects in our account, the sourcing process begins. This typically takes between one to three days, depending on the availability and birth dates of the animal. After the animal is secured, the time required for it to reach the appropriate adoption age can range from one week to six weeks, depending on the species.

Our average adoption turnaround time, from the initial inquiry to the adoption or collection day, is typically just one week. We prioritize efficiency, transparency, and a smooth experience throughout your exotic pet adoption journey.

Why Step 2 is Important

This step is crucial because it tailors the adoption process to your specific needs, demonstrating your commitment to responsible adoption. It also ensures a timely pet sourcing process, preventing misunderstandings in the adoption process and safeguarding against delays and miscommunications.

Step 3: 72-Hour Monitoring & Observation

Many times, baby animals stay with their mothers until they reach the required age and readiness for adoption. When your baby reaches the required age and is medically fit for adoption, all of them come to the Absolute Exotics SA facility for a 72-hour health monitoring and observation period. This 72-hour monitoring and observation are essential to ensure your pet's optimal health and well-being. Our dedicated team closely supervises this transition from mother's milk to formula, making necessary adjustments along the way. Additionally, during this time, we create a personalized feeding chart tailored to your pet's individual needs and weight, ensuring they receive the best care possible before finalizing the adoption process.

Why Step 3 is Important

This step is vital as it ensures your pet's optimal health by preventing the adoption of pets with hidden health issues. It sets a healthy foundation, safeguarding your pet's well-being and nutrition. Additionally, it provides a personalized feeding plan, establishing a strong foundation for a healthy pet-owner relationship.

Step 4: General Care and Basic Behaviour Training

In order to ensure that you are well-prepared to provide the best care for your new companion, we offer a comprehensive in-house general care training session. This training is designed to equip you with essential skills and knowledge necessary for the well-being of your exotic pet. It covers a range of topics, including proper hand-feeding techniques and other essential care practices. This training is of utmost importance and is scheduled to occur within the 72-hour health monitoring and observation period.

We believe that this early training not only enhances your ability to care for your pet but also strengthens the bond between you and your new companion. It's important to keep in mind that all general care training sessions are conducted exclusively at our facility and must be attended at least one day before the adoption process is finalized. This ensures that you are fully prepared to provide a loving and responsible home for your exotic pet.

Why Step 4 is Important

This step is important because it equips pet owners with essential skills, promoting responsible pet ownership. It ensures proper care techniques are followed, preventing unpreparedness and improper care, ultimately safeguarding responsible pet ownership and enhancing the well-being of the pet.

Step 5: Adoption Day and Pet Collection

The observation period is complete, and your baby & new pet is now ready for adoption. Before the final handover, we take all animals to one of our partnered 3rd party veterinarians for a general health check-up. This vet appointment includes all the required treatments and inoculations for the specific species of your pet. The check-up also includes a medical certificate, ensuring your new baby and pet are in optimal health and free from infectious diseases. On adoption day, you'll need to collect your pet from the Absolute Exotics SA premises. All outstanding payments must be settled in full during the collection process.

Why Step 5 is Important

This final step plays a crucial role in ensuring the well-being of your new pet. It guarantees their health, facilitates a smooth transition, and finalizes the adoption process. This step also ensures a secure transfer of ownership while minimizing disruptions in the animal's routine and overall well-being.
